Silent Movie - Phantom of the Opera (1928)

phantom

On Saturday, October 26, the immortal Lon Chaney will once again be stalking unsuspecting victims on the silver screen at the historic Lerner Theatre in downtown Elkhart. Chaney stars in the 1925 classic horror silent motion picture, The Phantom of the Opera.

This time-honored classic is an adaptation of the well-known Gaston Leroux novel in which the deformed Phantom haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in a twisted effort to have the management make a star of the woman he secretly loves.

Silent film specialist Christian Elliott will provide musical accompaniment for the film, playing the Lerner Theatre's magnificent Kimball organ. Elliott is very much in demand scoring and accompanying silent films.

He has done extensive work in the genre, including at the Packard Foundation's Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto, California. He has also appeared at UCLA, the Cinequest and San Francisco Silent Film Festivals, and the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. He has played with the San Diego Symphony, the Los Angeles Conservancy, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

A frequent performer at the American Theatre Organ Society's national conventions, he has also performed for the American Institute of Organ Builders, BBC Radio, and at the famed Hollywood Bowl.

Silent Movie - The General (1926)

Clark Wilson

The silent movie "The General" is a must-see for the tremendous comic genius of Buster Keaton which many folks have never experienced before and is suitable for all ages. This is brand new to the area but a celebration of the type of entertainment that the Lerner originally was built for.

Featured on the magnificent, restored organ for this event is Clark Wilson, one of the most prominent and recognized scorers of silent photoplay in America today. He will also present a few popular Broadway solo selections to show off the Mighty Kimball as an added attraction.

The music that Clark Wilson creates will surprise and delight your senses!

Handbells Columbus

Handbells Columbus

Handbells Columbus is a community handbell ensemble that was formed in the fall of 2006 to provide advanced ringing opportunities for Central Ohio handbell ringers, a number of whom were members of the former Symphonic Handbells of Columbus. The ringers are church musicians and business professionals from Columbus and the surrounding suburbs. The 14-member group is under the direction of Jennifer Fry and Albert Adcock.

The group currently rehearses at Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbus on Sunday evenings. They ring on more than 6 octaves of Malmark handbells and 5 octaves of Malmark handchimes, and are always interested in hearing from advanced ringers who would be available to serve as subs for rehearsals.

Handbells Columbus has performed at Broad Street United Methodist Church, First Congregational Church, and Northwest Christian Church in Columbus; Church of the Master United Methodist Church at Otterbein College in Westerville; First Moravian Church in Dover; Second Presbyterian Church in Newark; St Peter's Catholic Church in Mansfield, Ohio and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Dublin, Ohio. They have also provided seasonal music at Nationwide Children's Hospital in December.

In 2008 the group commissioned composer Karen Buckwalter to write a piece for handbells and concert organist, which was premiered at a concert on February 22, 2009, at First Congregational Church in Columbus.

This upcoming performance is a return to First Moravian Church in Dover, Ohio. They are also doing handbell/keyboard recordings for Beckenhorst Press.

Organ Concert

Community United Methodist Church
Circleville, OH

organist, Bryan Holten

On Wednesday, December 28th 2011, Circleville Community Methodist Church will host an organ concert with Bryan Holten. Program begins at 7:00 pm.

Bryan Holten, of Wilmington, Ohio, is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. He began piano studies at age eight, and a keen interest in sacred music led Bryan in his early teens to begin learning to play the organ. However, it was not until nearly age twenty, during his four years at Northern Kentucky University, that he began devoting full-time study to the instrument.

A particularly important part of this transitional process was his work as Organ Scholar of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was able to explore many aspects of church music and organ playing, from planning to performance.

Bryan has held several other church positions: Pianist, St. Anthony’s Episcopal Church, Wilmington; Organist, Wilmington United Methodist Church; and Music Intern, Downtown United Presbyterian Church, Rochester. His teachers have included Barbara Dennis (piano and organ), Sergei Polusmiak (piano), Nina Key (organ), and currently David Higgs, Chair of Eastman’s Department of Organ and Historical Keyboards. He also studies organ improvisation and harpsichord with William Porter.
